From 3 October 2022, renewal application for adults and some children (15yrs & younger) may apply by mail. To ensure you qualify for the mail-in, please follow the instructions related to your type of application to prepare your mail application kit www.usa.embassy.gov.au/passport-locations

One appointment per application required. You should allow a minimum of six weeks to receive your new passport. Appointments can be scheduled up to 2 months in advance. New appointments are opened each day.

We have limited capacity for emergency appointments. If you require a travel document urgently, please email us a copy (immigration notification, medical note, booked itinerary, etc) to nycg.passports@dfat.gov.au

Incomplete or incorrectly completed applications cannot be accepted. Application requirements are determined by Australian legislation and Australian Passport Office policy, and these requirements cannot be waived by Passport Office staff.

Rejected applications are returned to applicants and require re-lodgement.

Some simple errors may be able to be resolved at the interview, however most require the applicant to re-visit the Consulate at a later appointment date.

Certificates of No Impediment to Marriage (CNI) - Read 'Details' section

In some countries, foreigners must provide evidence that they are free to marry, before a legal marriage ceremony can be held in that country. A Certificate of No Impediment to Marriage (CNI) can be issued for this purpose.

It is your responsibility to ascertain whether the CNI must be issued in that country, or if a CNI issued in Australia or a third country is acceptable with the government authorities in the country in which you intend to marry. Rules can vary in different parts of the same country. Because of this, you should check with the government authorities in the state or province where you intend to get married.

*The Certificate also states that the Australian Consulate-General, New York is unable to confirm whether the person named is actually free to marry.*

A CNI is not a requirement under Australian law. The CNI is a general statement of the law in Australia concerning the recognition of foreign marriages. It states that the person named in the certificate has signed a declaration and, on the basis that the declaration is true and correct, there is no legal reason why they cannot marry.
